Jennifer Haase: Music
Dear Mrs. Claus
(Jennifer Haase)
Words and Music by Jennifer Haase
This song is very dear to me. First, because it came straight out of a dream I had of Santa sitting at a coffee shop alone on Christmas Eve writing to his beloved wife. And, second, because this is the first song I played at the writer's workshop where I met Rosanne Cash, who expressed such love for this song and suggested I write a bridge. (the bridge you see in the lyrics below "I'm in this coffee shop alone..." didn't exist before that workshop).
This song reminds me of my sweet dream, and of Rosanne, every time I play it.
Dear Mrs. Claus
Do you remember the good old days
Before the book tours and movie deals
Back when we lived on PBJs
and the silly dreams that got us here
(chorus)
Two kids on this white frontier
So much yet to know
Just a man with a long white beard
and an angel in the snow
All the faces and all the names
were what saved us when times got tough
Though a child of our own never came
You always said we had enough
I'm in this coffee shop alone
Waitress on the telephone
is wondering if I'm ever gonna leave
My hat and coat across the chair
Just need to write a note in care
Of someone who still believes
chorus
It's another cold December night
Me and the boys have stopped for a bite
Just a few hundred houses to go
Then I'm coming home
I'm coming home
